2011 Course Handout Guidelines - Updated

Handout materials must be submitted no later than March 11, 2011.

As part of AUA's ongoing resolution to go "green," paper copies of course handouts will not be provided on site. Handouts will be available online to registered course attendees prior to the Annual Meeting. A paperless format eliminates unnecessary waste, allows attendees the opportunity to review materials prior to the course session, and should act as a reference tool after the Annual Meeting.

Content: ALL handouts must include the following:

  1. Title of the session and list of faculty.
  2. Agenda/Outline.
  3. Faculty disclosure information. If speakers have nothing to disclose, a note must be included in the presentation that states "The presenters disclose that they have no relevant financial relationships to make relevant to this session."
  4. Session learning objectives.

Length: Additional pages will not be approved. Handouts exceeding the page limit will be returned to the Course Director for correction.
Please adhere to the following:

  • IC Courses – 12 pages (maximum)
  • PG Courses – 18 pages (maximum)
  • HOL Courses – 8 pages (maximum)
  • SP Courses – 24 pages (maximum)
  • If you are planning to use portions of PowerPoint materials for your handout, please limit to 3 slides per page (i.e., the maximum for 12 single-sided pages is 36 slides).

Appearance: The design and material included in your handout is largely up to your discretion, though we do ask that you keep the following suggestions in mind.

  • PowerPoint slides with dark or busy backgrounds will not print well. Dark text on light or no background works best.
  • For ease of reading, try to keep all fonts to 12pt. or larger.
  • Make sure all graphics and charts are legible. Many that are clearly visible on screen may not be so on paper.
  • All handouts submitted to the AUA will be converted to PDF and will include an AUA-designed exterior cover page listing the course title, course number, course director and faculty.

Permissions: All reprints used in handouts must be accompanied by a current (2011) copyright release. (This does not include articles from The Journal of Urology or the AUA Update Series.) Reprints without a release cannot be duplicated. Be sure to obtain a release for print and electronic media reproduction. Please include reprint permissions with your handout. If you submitted an article for publication, you need to obtain reprint permission for the article. Note: The AUA will not pay fees for reprint permissions.

Personal promotional material is not permitted on handouts. The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) prohibits the distribution of company literature and additional handout materials at the course door unless the AUA Office of Education has granted prior approval. If you do so, the course may be cancelled and/or you will not be invited to participate in future AUA educational programs.
