AUA Speaker/Faculty Guidelines for Industry Event Participation

As recommended by the AUA Education Council, the AUA Board of Directors has approved guidelines regarding speaker/faculty participation at industry exhibits or events during the AUA Annual Meeting as follows:

1. Any participant in the AUA Plenary Sessions may not speak at an industry exhibit booth or industry supported function during the official days of the annual meeting. A pre-taped video at the exhibit booth is acceptable.

Plenary speakers are allowed to present data at AUA press conferences at the Annual Meeting.

2. Plenary participants, program moderators, course directors and faculty may not speak at an industry exhibit booth. A pre-taped video at the exhibit booth is acceptable. Presentations may be made at the official AUA Industry Clinical Update Theater, AUA Skills Enhancement Workshops and Industry Scientific Updates provided the following criteria are met:
a. Proper disclosure of any relationship the presenter has with the supporting company
b. The presentation is original and not duplicated during the official AUA Annual Meeting
c. The presentation is based on acceptable scientific principles that are generally accepted as valid by the urology profession
d. The presentation is fair and balanced
e. The activity is not for CME credit

3. Podium presenters, abstract authors and abstract co-authors may speak at the exhibit booth, official AUA Industry Clinical Update Theater, AUA Skills Enhancement Workshops, and Industry Scientific Updates provided these presentations conform to criteria a. through e., as outlined in number 2 above. A pre-taped video at the exhibit booth is also acceptable.

Hands-On Labs faculty (excluding faculty course director) may assist industry in demonstrating and/or teaching skills to urologists with industry's equipment in the Skills Enhancement Workshops. Skills Enhancement Workshops are designed to offer a larger number of urologists the opportunity to learn and/or practice their skills using industry's equipment. This area is to be considered an extension of the Hands-On Labs program, but not in direct competition with the program. Further, the content of the Hands-On Labs is not to be repeated in the Skills Enhancement Workshops.

Satellite Programs and Other Non-AUA Meetings/Programs
In the past the AUA has received various complaints about some of our speakers presenting data in the same format at satellite and other non-AUA meetings held immediately prior to the AUA meeting, and then again at AUA courses. This practice is not fair to physicians who pay registration fees to attend AUA-sponsored courses. Speakers are not allowed to present the same data in similar formats at satellite or other non-AUA meetings and again at AUA-sponsored courses. AUA does not want its audience (many of whom have paid to attend) to be provided information that has already been presented at a free satellite or other non-AUA seminars. This practice will not only preserve the mission of the AUA program but it will also preserve the educational content of the Satellite Programs. Speakers will not be invited to participate in our Annual Meeting for the next two years if this policy is violated.
